The importance of good governance in your community club

The key job of anyone in an oversight role, whether paid or unpaid, is to guide their organisation to a better place, no matter its size.  Following the principles of modern governance will help support people in oversight roles to fulfill this duty.  Whilst the principles of modern governance are universal, the pathway is not. Your path to modern governance should be simple, practical and best suited to the context of your organisation.

The committees of many community sports clubs tend to focus on the operations, with only limited discussion of strategy and risk. Committees are very passionate about their club’s success and as a result may focus on the day-to day management, sometimes at the cost of their critical governance role to provide oversight for the club and its future.  Also, the concept of thinking about their role in building a sustainable sports club or monitoring emerging opportunities or risks is often left to chance, potentially leaving both the club and individuals exposed.

TPPG is pleased to offer a very practical workshop to community sports clubs with limited financial and management resources, to help them understand the governance essentials and what they need to do to reshape their approach.

TPPG Fit-for-Purpose Workshops support your club to take the theory into practice to help your committee move from operations to oversight, to support the Path to Modern Governance™.

In a very cost effective and practical way, the workshop will help participants to be aware of their obligations, be able to build governance content and embed good governance into the club.  The workshops provide an overview of the theory and practice for committee members and management to help build their understanding to better frame their meeting agenda.

TPPG will work through the Path to Modern Governance™ to provide a practical pathway to consider the 3 key elements of modern governance:

  • Oversight of GROWTH – allow you to consider the key strategic pillars that will build a sustainable community sports club
  • Oversight of CHANGE – framing discussions to support committee members to what they “should” know
  • Oversight of RISK in the key business functions – a critical governance responsibility

The outcome: a new lens to help embed modern governance. After the session, those in oversight roles are left with an approach to frame their governance meetings around outcome, not activity, thus allowing the committee to oversee and support management to manage.

These practical tools will give you what you need to take good governance theory into practice, supporting you to leave your club in a better place.
