Improving Mental Health and Wellbeing Through Sport

Published Mon 23 Mar 2026

Community sport is more than just a game. It plays a vital role in fostering connection, building a sense of belonging, and strengthening resilience within communities.

Sport NSW was proud to launch a new report in partnership with Lifeline Australia and Business Sydney, highlighting the important role sport can play in supporting mental health and wellbeing. The report outlines the growing evidence linking participation in community sport with improved mental health outcomes, stronger social connections, and more resilient communities.

The launch brought together leaders from sport, government, business, and the mental health sector to explore how community sport contributes far beyond physical activity. A key theme emerged throughout the discussion: when people are connected through sport, communities become stronger, more inclusive, and better equipped to support wellbeing.

Across New South Wales, this is something the sector sees every day. Local clubs and community organisations provide safe, supportive environments where individuals can build relationships, develop confidence, and feel a genuine sense of belonging.

Sport NSW remains committed to advocating for greater recognition of the value community sport delivers. This includes its impact not only on physical health, but also on mental wellbeing, social cohesion, and overall community strength.

We thank Business Sydney and Deloitte for convening such an important conversation and for continuing to bring together cross-sector leaders to drive meaningful change.

The evidence continues to grow, and so too does the case for investing in community sport as a cornerstone of healthier, more connected communities.
